Uphold Expected Infanticide Veto

Uphold Veto of Infanticide Legislation, Bill HB 5179

Radical culture-of-death legislators voted 107-50 on the ROE Infanticide Act HB 5179. Through backroom deals, the radicals on Beacon Hill put forth the worst provisions of the ROE Infanticide Act and sent it to the governor. Governor Baker sent the legislation back recommending a few revisions including keeping the age of consent at 18, not the too-young age of 16. The House rejected Governor Baker’s recommendations as well as an amendment filed by representatives Lombardo and Sullivan to save the life of a baby born alive after a botched abortion.

The legislature sent Governor Baker HB 5179 this past Tuesday, and Governor Baker vetoed it on Christmas Eve. The legislature is expected to take up an override vote this Monday, December 28th!

If passed, HB 5179 would:

  • lower the age that a girl can get an abortion without parental consent from 18 to 16;
  • allow infanticide by replacing the requirement that the physician take all reasonable steps to save the life of the baby with only a requirement that equipment be in the room without a requirement that the physician must actually use it;
  • allow less-qualified nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and midwives to perform risky abortions up to 24 weeks of pregnancy, which, in some cases, is considered major surgery;
  • expand cases of late-term abortions up to birth; and
  • add language that would enshrine abortion as a right that prohibits the state from interfering with.

Even in liberal Massachusetts, the average person does not want to legalize infanticide nor allow young, impressionable, and vulnerable girls to get abortions without any parental involvement.

Fifty members of the state House of Representatives opposed this bill. To uphold a veto by the Governor, we need 53 votes, so just 3 representatives must change their vote.

Please take 30 seconds to send your state representative an email asking him or her to vote to uphold the Governor’s veto of bill HB 5179.
